5 Tips to Avoid Hot Sleepless Nights on Your Simmons Mattress This Summer

As summer heats up, it can get harder and harder to fall asleep. Falling asleep in high temperatures is a common problem — especially in warmer climates — but there are some things you can do to beat that pesky nighttime heat.

Getting a Simmons mattress is a great place to start — Simmons’ Pocketed Coil design and diamond-infused memory foam are already the ultimate in cooling technology. But, if you’re still struggling with high temperatures at night, here are some tips to help you keep your cool.

  1. Cover that Mat

A good mattress topper or pad can help minimize heat retention in your bed. Fluffy, pillowtop pads can help keep air flowing around your mattress, with the added bonus of feeling like you’re sleeping on a cloud! If you’re a fan of the memory-foam feel but don’t want the added heat, try a cushy, gel foam topper. Gel swirls can help dissipate heat and keep you cool and comfortable — instead of clammy — at night.

  1. Help a Mattress Out

A Simmons mattress may be naturally cooling, but your bedframe might be hurting its ability to keep you cool. A platform bed with solid plywood underneath prevents air from circulating and can trap heat inside the mattress. Wood and metal frames with evenly spaced slats can help promote airflow and keep your mattress cooler, which means more Zzzz’s for you.

  1. Cold cuddles

Cooling pads can be found cheaply at most drug stores, but if you’re feeling especially crafty you can make one yourself in just a few minutes. Fill a (clean) sock with rice, tie or sew the end closed, and let it sit in the freezer for a few hours. Cuddling up with your cold pack at night can help keep your body temperature down until you nod off to dreamland.

  1. Peak performance PJs

If you typically prefer flannel or sweatpants as pajamas, switching to lighter, looser fabrics might help you sleep better: Soft, loose cotton PJs can help air flow and keep you cooler. You could also try a technique called the “Egyptian Method,” which involves soaking your clothes in water before going to bed. You’ll want to pair this method with some form of air circulation, like an open window or a fan, so the breeze can wick away heat from your body. Say good bye to the heat, and hello to a nice cool breeze.

Of course, be sure to squeeze out the excess water before getting into bed: You wouldn’t want to flood and ruin that new mattress.

  1. Air Conditioning, DIY Style

If you’re trying to save on electricity — or if your place doesn’t have a built-in air conditioner — try rigging your own with an electric fan, a shallow tray, and some ice cubes. Spread out some ice in a bowl or baking pan and set up your fan to blow air over it. The air will pick up the moisture and lower temperatures from the ice, spreading it out to cool down your whole room. Breeze-tastic.

There’s nothing worse than tossing and turning throughout the night, but keeping cool in the summer doesn’t have to be a challenge. Follow these tips and you’ll be sleeping soundly on your Simmons mattress all season long, no matter how much heat summer throws your way.
